Andy Murray to play in Australian Open as tennis icon returns to Grand Slam singles action

Comeback king Andy Murray will play in next year's Australian Open singles one year after his career looked all but over.

The tennis legend's comeback bid has been gathering pace and he will feature in one of his favourite events at the start of 2020.

The Scottish sporting hero has been enjoying life mixing Challenger and ATP tour contests as he gets back to full fitness after career-saving hip surgery.

The five-time Aussie Open finalist will be in the draw as the event Tweeted out confirmation on Tuesday. It marks an incredible turnaround with his career prospects looking bleak in the aftermath of last year's early exit.

And Australian Open director Craig Tiley cannot wait for the the Melbourne favourite to make his return.

He said: “For sure Andy will be here.

“I was on the phone to his agent this morning. He is going to be in Australia early.

“He is ready to return. Remember he said goodbye a year ago. It’s great in that period he had surgery and has rebounded really well.”

Murray is still getting back to his best but will get the chance to play in front of supporters who he has treated to some of his finest tennis.

Murray and rival Novak Djokovic 's incredible rivalry has spanned over a decade but their finest encounters have been on the hard courts Down Under.

And the par could renew accquiantances once again next year.
