Andy Murray to make latest tennis comeback behind-closed-doors in June

Andy Murray is planning to make his latest comeback in a behind-closed-doors event organised by his brother Jamie next month.

The LTA on Wednesday announced the staging of four British Tour events at the National Tennis Centre in July – with the top cash prizes of £2,250.

But elite tennis will first return in the UK in a tournament organised by Jamie Murray at the end of June – just before when Wimbledon should have been held this year.

Andy Murray, who has not played since the Davis Cup last November, wants to play in his brother's event and see how his body reacts before committing to the LTA tournaments.

The former world No.1 has undergone two hips surgeries since limping out of Wimbledon in 2017 – and also underwent back surgery in 2013.

Wimbledon has been cancelled for the first time since the Second World War and the WTA and ATP tours have been suspended until at least August.

The LTA plan to stage four three-day events from July 3-26 with the top 32 players in the UK – 16 men and 16 women – invited to play.

The hardcourt events will be held at Roehampton and could be streamed live on the LTA website. Players have until June 15 to enter.

Prize money in the two Premier-level events – to be held July 3-5 and 18-19 – will each total £16,000 and include doubles tournaments. The singles winners at Wimbledon last year each banked £2.35m.

LTA chief executive Scott Lloyd said: “The LTA is actively engaged in developing the necessary guidelines for behind closed doors events, which we hope will be determined by the Government in the coming weeks to ensure the safest environment for anyone involved in returning to competition and look forward to bringing tennis back into people’s lives this summer.”
