Andy Murray believes he has dispelled the myth he can no longer match the best players in the world after knocking out top seed Jannik Sinner in the Stockholm Open.
Murray produced what he called his “best win this season” last night against a top-10 player for a 7-6 6-3 victory to set up a quarter-final meeting against Tommy Paul later today in his last tournament of the year.
“I’m playing at the top level and I’m winning matches against the best players in the world,” he said after his straight-sets win over Sinner. “The ones that I’m losing, I’m pushing the best players in the world. That argument is finished. I can compete at the top level.”
The Briton had stepped onto court as the clear underdog despite some good results in preceding tournaments and now has his sights on a first singles title win in two years.
“Now I’m in the quarters, I want to have a deep run here,” he said. “I want to keep it going now. If I want to move back up the rankings and have good runs in tournaments again, I need to win these matches.
“I think I still have a lot to offer. I am still able to compete and win matches against guys that are in the top 10 in the world and I’ve been competitive against guys that are three/four in the world.
“So, if my body stays good and I’m able to build some momentum at more tournaments and matches, I believe I can get right up there again.”
