Andy Murray tests positive for Covid-19 with Australian Open return in doubt

Tennis superstar Andy Murray has tested positive for Covid-19, with his return to the Australian Open now in doubt.

Murray is due to play in Melbourne in the first Grand Slam of the year but is currently isolating at home after returning a positive test.

He had been due to travel to Australia in one of 18 chartered flights to take players from around the world to compete in the tournament.

The Glasgow-born star hasn't played since being beat by Fernando Verdasco in straight sets back in October last year.

He had planned on making a return to the Australian Open - which is due to begin on February 8 - but it is now in doubt due to the virus.

Murray is understood to still be hoping to make it over to the tournament and is believed to be well, despite having the virus.

Murray and his team are working closely with tournament director Craig Tiley to try to come up with an acceptable solution.

Tournament organisers spent several months negotiating an arrangement that was acceptable to local and national government agencies regarding the admission of more than 1,000 tennis players and associated personnel to Australia.

Players are due to begin arriving in the country within the next 24 hours before completing a two-week period of quarantine, during which they are allowed out of their rooms to practise for five hours a day.
