Andy Murray set for Wimbledon statue honour as work begins on everlasting tribute to Scots hero

Wimbledon chiefs have confirmed work is under way to honour two-time champion and Scots hero Andy Murray with a statue at the All England Club.

Philip Brook, chairman of Wimbledon, revealed they want the sculpture to be in place soon after Murray retires.

Murray’s Wimbers campaign ended yesterday when he bowed out of the mixed doubles with Serena Williams.

Brook said: “We want to recognise Andy’s significant achievements at Wimbledon in an appropriate way and think an appropriate time is to unveil something when he retires.

“We’ve done work on it already and there is still more to do but it might take six months or longer to choose and commission something.”

Murray will now undergo a battery of tests before deciding on his next step with his new hip. His superstar pairing with Williams lost 6-3 4-6 6-2 the No.1 seeds Bruno Soares and Nicole Melichar yesterday.

Also out of the men’s doubles, Murray’s return from January surgery has seen him win seven matches – and title at Queen’s Club – and suffer four defeats in three grass-court events.

He said: “I achieved a lot. Got on the court and considering the lack of matches, I did okay. The most positive thing is that my body felt good.”

But Murray admitted it was “pretty unlikely” he will return to play singles at the US Open and he will hit the gym and practice court instead.

He said: “It’s a lot of physical work now trying to get stronger get a good balance with all of the muscles around my hip.

“I’ll do four to six weeks of training then I’ll have some more physical testing done after that. Hopefully I will have progressed again.”

Asked about teaming up again at the US Open, Williams said: “We had so much fun. We aren’t ready for it to be over.”
