Andy Murray’s Davis Cup win was watched by a peak audience of 5 million on Sunday as viewers as Great Britain claimed the trophy for the first time in 79 years.
Murray’s win over Belgium number one David Goffin is almost certainly the most-watched Davis Cup matches of all time in the UK, as Great Britain claimed victory for the first time since 1936.
BBC1’s overall coverage, which ran from 12pm to about 3.45pm, drew an average of 3 million viewers and a 22.9% share.
The five-minute peak audience hit 5 million between 3pm and 3.05pm as Murray finally defeated Goffin in three sets after a three hour match.
On Saturday, an average of 2.6 million watched BBC1’s coverage of the doubles as Andy and his older brother Jamie won to set up the team for victory.
The overall coverage between 2pm and 5.15pm drew an average of 2.6 million viewers and a 20.6% share of total TV viewing.
The 15-minute peak audience hit 3.5 million.
