Andy Murray ruled OUT of Australian Open as positive Covid test rocks Grand Slam bid

Scottish tennis legend Andy Murray won't be taking part in this year's Australian Open.

The former Wimbledon champion tested positive for Covid-19 last week and was unable to travel to Melbourne.

It means he will be unable to come out of self-isolation to prepare for the tournament which starts on February 8.

Arrivals are subject to a 14-day quarantine period and after another test showed he still has the virus it has destroyed any lingering hopes of Murray participating.

He said: "Gutted to share that I won’t be flying out to Australia to compete at the Australian Open.

"We’ve been in constant dialogue with Tennis Australia to try and find a solution which would allow some form of workable quarantine, but we couldn’t make it work.

“I want to thank everyone there for their efforts, I’m devastated not to be playing out in Australia - It’s a country and tournament that I love."

He had planned to take part in the Grand Slam tournament for the first time since the 2019 edition, one he had feared would be his last as a professional.
