Andy Murray reveals reason for sober celebrations and his social media Scotland 'rinsing'

Andy Murray has lifted the lid on the reason he couldn’t raise the roof celebrating Scotland’s Euro glory night in Serbia - his wife was sleeping upstairs.

The double Wimbledon winning Scot tuned in along with millions of other Scots to see Steve Clarke’s heroes end a 22-year wait to qualify for a major tournament.

But he admits he got “rinsed” on social media after posting images of his less than ecstatic fist pumping celebrations.

And he insists that’s a small price to pay to keep the peace with wife Kim who was asleep - as were their young kids Sophia, Edie and Teddy - and blissfully unaware of the historic moment.

Murray is now backing Scotland to shock England at next year's European Championship finals.

And he revealed: “'So I got absolutely rinsed for the video that I took that I put on Instagram the other day when Scotland won, which was unbelievably understated.

“It was obviously a huge moment but my wife was sleeping upstairs and my three children. If I'd woken them up for that, you know, the next week would have been pretty tough for me.

“Why wasn't Kim watching with me? I don't know exactly. Maybe she doesn't like me that much.

“But getting up with three kids at 5.30 in the morning or 6am, I give her a pass for that. She's not a huge football fan.”

Speaking on a Twitch chat with Frenchman Gael Monfils, Murray backed Scotland to get a result against England in next summer’s highly-anticipated group match.

“For me, it'll be tough for Scotland,” he said.

“It's a tough group. Could they do something against England? Why not? I mean the pressure will be on the English team.

“What I really hope is that by that time fans will be allowed in the stadium. It'll be brilliant because it'll be one of the first sporting events back that will be hosting fans so it'd be great if they could get fans into Wembley for that match. It would be an amazing atmosphere.”
