Andy Murray reveals he took up painting during lockdown with 'horrific' results

Andy Murray has revealed he took up painting during lockdown – but admits his efforts were “horrific”.

The tennis star decided to try to copy his wife Kim, who is a talented portrait artist.

He has been drawing and painting for his three children to keep them entertained while home in Surrey over the past few months. But the 33-year-old confessed his skills on the tennis court did not extend to the world of art.

Murray and Kim have daughters Sophia, four, two-year-old Edie and baby Teddy, born in October. He said: “I’ve learned that I’m not very good at painting and drawing. The kids are always asking for things to be drawn or to be coloured in.

“My wife, who is an artist, is clearly very good. I, on the other hand, am horrific but I’m always happy to try.

“While lockdown hasn’t been easy for anyone, it’s been great getting to spend time with the kids and be around them as I’m usually off competing.”

Murray became friends with artist Maggi Hambling after he decided to learn about art while recuperating from a hip injury.

Her portrait of him was unveiled at the National Portrait Gallery earlier this year.
