Andy Murray pulls out of Dubai Tennis Championships after Qatar run

Andy Murray has pulled out of this week’s Dubai Tennis Championships following his run to the final in Qatar last week.

Event organisers in the UAE sounded alarm bells when they announced on Monday morning that the former world No1 had pulled out with a hip injury.

But his withdrawal is said to only be precautionary after his previous exertions in the Middle East and he is expected to be fully fit to compete at Indian Wells the following week.

Murray has had a strong start to 2023. He initially impressed at the Australian Open and then reached the final in Qatar before losing to Daniil Medvedev.

In a statement, the Dubai Tennis Championships said: “We regret to inform you that Andy Murray is unable to participate in this year’s tournaments. Andy has been dealing with a recurring hip injury that has unfortunately forced him out in Dubai.”

Because of the issues with Murray’s hip, having undergone a replacement, it raised question marks about his future.

But his team are adamant it is not a major concern and he will be fit for the early American hardcourt part of the season.
