Andy Murray has moved back into the world’s top three after reaching the final of the Miami Open, where he lost 7-6, 4-6, 6-0 to World No1 Novak Djokovic.
Djokovic, who added the Miami title to his victory at Indian Wells in March – the third time he has won both tournaments in the same season – remains at the top of the rankings, over 4,000 points clear of second-placed Roger Federer.
Murray replaces Rafael Nadal in third spot in the ATP rankings, with the Spaniard slipping to fifth and Japan’s Kei Nishikori remaining in fourth. Murray is no longer Britain’s sole representative in the top 100 – Aljaz Bedene, who has become a British citizen after previously representing Slovenia, is ranked 99th.
In the women’s rankings, Serena Williams extended her points lead after winning in Miami, with her opponent in the final, Spain’s Carla Suarez Navarro, moving into the world’s top ten for the first time. Maria Sharapova of Russia is ranked second, with Simona Halep, winner in Indian Wells, in third position.
