Andy Murray today revealed he and Serena Williams are cementing their chemistry between points with “unrepeatable” jokes as they continue their quest to lift the Wimbledon mixed doubles trophy.
Murray spoke of the growing rapport between the two players, who are teaming up on court for the first time.
The Scot said he was “more relaxed” at this year’s Wimbledon after skipping the “more stressful” singles tournament as he continues his comeback from hip surgery in January.
The pair, nicknamed “Murena” by Williams, were taking part in the third round today after defeating 14th seeds Fabrice Martin and Raquel Atawo last night.
Writing in his BBC column, Murray, 32, said: “Serena and I shared a few jokes out there on Tuesday but we can’t reveal what they were because the language was not repeatable!
“I was feeling more relaxed and that was probably because Serena was making me laugh.”
Murray said playing in the mixed doubles with the 23-time Grand Slam singles winner, 37, was “good fun”. “Playing doubles is different to the singles and has been a new experience for me,” he said. “It has been more relaxed.”
He has been making his long-awaited comeback after hip surgery, which it was feared could force him to retire. He is targeting a comeback in singles but is reluctant to put a time frame on it.
He said: “I would love to play. I need to look long-term with this. Whether that’s nine months or 18 months, I don’t know. I’ll do my best to make it as soon as I can.”
