Andy Murray mocks Nigel Farage over Serbia visit to see Novak Djokovic's brother

Andy Murray has long been a champion of Scotland and human rights, but the tennis star has attracted even greater support after taking Nigel Farage to account on Twitter.

The former Wimbledon and US Open champion appeared to make a tongue in cheek post that targeted Farage’s anti-Eastern European immigration views whilst the politician was in Serbia.

Nigel Farage, who was the former leader of UKIP and a major player in the Leave campaign during the EU referendum, travelled to Serbia in order to show his support for Novak Djokovic by meeting with his brother and taking a tour around the Serbian players trophy room.

Djokovic was released today from an Australian detention centre after issues with his Visa meant that officials had questioned his exemption for the Covid vaccine.

And it is believed that Farage was travelling to Serbia in order to make a point that he supported the Serbians stance.

But Farage has a long history of xenophobic comments targeted towards Eastern Europeans in the UK.

In the past he has called Romanian’s “criminals” as well as said that he “Any normal and fair-minded person would have a perfect right to be concerned if a group of Romanian people suddenly moved next door.”

Alongside this, Farage has blamed immigrants for him being late for an event and said that people speaking other languages on the London underground made him feel “uncomfortable.”

Farage tweeted on Sunday evening: “In the trophy room with Novak's brother Djordje.”

But in response, Andy Murray, who is often accused of being boring - although was anything but here - tweeted: “Please record the awkward moment when you tell them you’ve spent most of your career campaigning to have people from Eastern Europe deported.”

Australia has strict entry requirements for non-nationals - whether Covid related or not - and many have pointed out that Farage has championed for these rules to be put in place in the UK.

Though the irony has been too much for some to take with NewsThump replying to Murray’s tweet with: “BREAKING! Man who spent years promoting Australian-style immigration system now furious at Australian-style immigration system”

Another Twitter user said: “Farage, once a champion of a "points based Australian Immigration System" is outraged when white, millionaire and anti vax tennis star, #NoVaxDjoCovid falls foul of it.

“Confirmation that it is indeed possible to hate the Bollock Brained Foghorn of Ignorance even more.”
