Andy Murray makes French Open decision with Brit facing Wimbledon dilemma

Andy Murray will not feature at Roland Garros this year in a move that is believed to be a sign he is prioritising his fitness for Wimbledon.

The Scotsman becomes the latest big name to withdraw from the French Open this year, as Murray joins the likes of Rafael Nadal and Nick Kyrgios in watching the tournament from the sidelines.

Earlier this month, Murray was faced with plenty of questions regarding whether he'd star in the tournament and he kept his cards close to his chest.

"I don’t know," Murray told the Guardian. "I’ll need to chat to my team about that and see what I do from here. There’s the possibility of playing the tournament next week in France.

"Whether I’d consider playing the week before the French Open or not, I really don’t know. I’ll need to have a chat with the team and see what the best thing to do is."

This is not the first time Murray has withdrawn from the French Open and previous decisions are thought to have been made with his fitness in mind.

While some believe that Murray has made this call so he can stay in top shape for the grass court season, he insisted it was more tactical than that.

"It’s not so much about [physical worries]," he added. "I trust that my body will be OK after what I did at the beginning of the year. I played back-to-back five-hour matches and did well physically in those matches. There’s no reason why that should necessarily be any different here.

"It was just more to see where my game is at. It’s just what the right thing is to prioritise at this stage in my career. I trust my body now but I’m aware that my best chance of having a deep run is more likely to happen at Wimbledon."

Murray's last match came against Stan Wawrinka in the BNP Paribas Primrose Bordeaux, where he was resoundingly beaten in straight sets, with the clash lasting just one hour and 15 minutes.

Since undergoing hip surgery, Murray has appeared at the French Open just once back in 2020. He was eliminated at the first-round stage by Wawrinka.
