Andy Murray, Johanna Konta and Dan Evans progress on day two at US Open

Andy Murray, Johanna Konta and Dan Evans all progressed to the second round of the US Open on a highly positive day for British tennis at Flushing Meadows.

The trio join Kyle Edmund and Cameron Norrie who both earned wins on Monday, with Heather Watson the only Brit to exit the tournament in the opening round.

While both Murray and Norrie were forced to go the distance in respective five-set thrillers, British tennis looks in good shape with four men reaching the second round of the US Open for the first time since 1974.

Elsewhere, men's second seed Dominic Thiem defeated Jaume Muna, while women's third seed Serena Williams overcame Kristie Ahn in straight sets.

Though Murray was on court first on Tuesday, he wasn't the first to finish, made to battle from two sets down to defeat Yoshihito Nishioka in four hours 38 minutes.

The former world no1 looked somewhat flat as he fell two sets and a break behind, finding inspiration seemingly from nowhere to produce a stunning comeback in an almost-empty 23,000 seat Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Watching on were the likes of Naomi Osaka, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Thiem as the legendary three-time Grand Slam champion proved his fitness and determination had not subsided, despite playing in his first major since resurfacing hip surgery.

Murray's win marks the tenth occasion he has come back from two sets down to win in five, and he'll return on Thursday to play 15th seed Felix Auger-Aliassime.

Ninth seed Konta, 29, defeated fellow Brit Watson in an intriguing affair, in which she was made to work exceptionally to win a hard-fought first set.

Konta saved six set points, before winning a tie-break by nine points to seven.

The second set proved more straightforward for the British no1, however, dropping just one game to set up a tie against Romania's world no77 Sorana Cirstea.

Last up for the Brits was Evans, who overcame Thiago Seyboth Wild in a routine straight-sets win.

The 23rd seed blasted through his Brazilian opposition in the opening two sets, dropping just three games in the process.

The third and final set proved more challenging, but it was the Brit who emerged victorious once more, winning the tie-break by seven points to five. He'll play either Corentin Moutet or Jiri Vesely.
