Andy Murray "highly unlikely" to make Australian Open following positive Covid test

Andy is “highly unlikely” to play in the Australian Open after testing positive for Covid-19, according to Todd Woodbridge.

The Scot was unable to join special charter flights to Australia for players and coaches and is isolating at his Surrey home.

The Australian Open organisers agreed strict health protocols with the Victorian government which required players to arrive on private plans and then undergo a strict two-week quarantine.

Murray's camp are understood to be in negotiations with Tennis Australia to see if the former world No.1 will be allowed to arrive late for a tournament which starts on February 8.

The Scot has not played an ATP event since last October and played only seven matches in 2020.

Stars such as Rafa Nadal have started to arrive in Adelaide and Melbourne.

But nine-time Wimbledon doubles champion Woodbridge, now a commentator for Channel Nine, cast doubt on Murray arriving late for the first Grand Slam of the season.

“Andy didn't make the charter flight,” he said. “All of the players needed to make charter flights to be able to get here in time to be able to go through the quarantine period.

“If he were able to get his own charter into Melbourne, then possibly he could get here in time.

“I think that is highly, highly unlikely because Andy has been through major rehabilitation with hip surgeries. For him to arrive late and only get out with a couple of days potentially of full-court practice before the Australian Open, I don't think he would take the risk on his body after what he has gone through to get to this point in his recovery.”
