Andy Murray calls for Margaret Court Arena to be renamed ahead of Australian Open

Andy Murray believes Australian Open officials should consider renaming the Margaret Court Arena at the first Grand Slam of the year.

Court, who holds the record for Grand Slam, has angered people for her outspoken views against same-sex marriage and transgender athletes.

And Murray, a five-time finalist at the event, told pridelife.com: “When you get to the Australian Open you want to concentrate on the tennis. Court’s views detract from that.

“As far as remaining the venue…yes, it’s something the sport should consider. I don’t know who makes the final decision on that but I don’t think her values are what tennis stands for.”

Court has proved an increasingly divisive figure. This year, a ceremony in her name was held at the venue to mark 50 years since her calendar Grand Slam.

It led to public opposition from the likes of Martina Navratilova and John McEnroe, who both called for the Margaret Court Arena to be renamed.

And Murray added: “She has obviously offended and upset a lot of people over the years. I think the players certainly have spoken up, which is a positive thing."
