Andy Murray and Serena Williams dumped out of Wimbledon mixed doubles by top seeds

Andy Murray and Serena Williams have crashed out of the Wimbledon mixed doubles following defeat to top seeds Bruno Soares and Nicole Melichar.

The pair recovered from a set down to level the last 16 tie but eventually went down 6-3 4-6 6-2 to the tournament favourites.

Murray and Williams had battled through two opening rounds but came up just short against the classy duo.

Soares and Melichar swept to a comfortable first set, breaking in the eighth game to take an early advantage.

But, backed by the British crowd, Murray and Williams fired back to level as Soares lost his cool - registering three double faults in a row to hand over the second set.

However, far less than wilt following that extremely shaky end to the set, Soares and Melichar went up a gear and raced into a 4-1 lead in the decider as Murray in particular looked out of sorts.

They eventually saw out the set 6-2 to claim victory over their high-profile opponents.

The defeat brings Murray's involvement in Wimbledon to an end as he continues his comeback from career-saving hip surgery earlier this year.

That the Scot took to the court at all is a remarkable turnaround considering fears he was being forced to retire due to the ongoing issue.

Murray is building towards a return to the singles circuit but has admitted August's US Open may come too soon for him.

Williams, meanwhile, faces Barbora Strycova in the women's semi-final on Thursday.
