Andy Murray and Feliciano Lopez come back from brink to win again at the Rogers Cup

Andy Murray and Feliciano Lopez maintained their 100 per cent record together as they saved a match point to win their opening match of the Rogers Cup.

The pairing, who won Queen’s in June, had looked on the verge of defeat to No2 seeds Lukasz Kubot and Marcelo Melo in the deciding tiebreak, only to recover for a 6-7, 6-3, 11-9 victory in Montreal.

A Lopez ace when 9-8 down negated that threat before rounding off an impressive win over the 2017 Wimbledon champions.

And Murray said: “In the match tiebreak, it felt like we were hitting so many good shots and not getting rewarded. It was tight at the end, but we did well to get through.”

The win set up a second-round match against French Open finalists Jeremy Chardy and Fabrice Martin.

In the singles, Kyle Edmund beat Nick Kyrgios 6-3, 6-4, with the Australian returning to his on-court histrionics after winning in Washington last week.

Kyrgios berated umpire Adel Nour for not having the right towel for him on court, which finally came at the latter stages of the first set.
