Andy Halliday signs for Hearts as Robbie Neilson beefs up midfield options with former Rangers man

Andy Halliday has signed for Hearts on a two-year deal.

The former Rangers midfielder has been without a club since leaving Ibrox in the summer, where he was surplus to Steven Gerrard’s requirments.

But now he will restart his career at Tynecastle after successful talks with Robbie Neilson.

Halliday had said he would be reluctant to play for another club in Scotland, such was his affinity with his boyhood heroes after five years in Govan.

A move to England or America was the 28-year-old’s preference, but with no suitable offers materialising, a return to the Scottish Championship was thrashed out.

Neilson has been vocal in his desire to sign a more defensive minded midfielder, and Halliday’s ability to also fill in at left back when required should also prove useful following the departure of Aaron Hickey to Bologna and Aidy White’s injury.

It’s at the base of the midfielder where Halliday operates best however, and his arrival will allow Peter Haring more time to get full match fit, and also be used as a centre back if needed.

Halliday of course has experience of winning the Championship previously, as part of Mark Warburton’s Rangers squad that achieved promotion back to the top flight in 2015/16.
