Andy Halliday rules out Rangers 'disaster' as midfielder points to untouchable Ibrox two

Former Rangers star Andy Halliday reckons Rangers won't collapse in adversity like they did last season - because Steven Gerrard's squad is far too strong.

And he reckons there are only two players in the squad whose absence could unsettle their title tilt in captain James Tavernier and wing wizard Ryan Kent.

Halliday, now plying his trade in the Championship with Hearts, was part of the team that capitulated after the winter break last term.

The performed brilliantly in the run up to Christmas and a win over Celtic at Parkhead ensured they would top the league if they won their game in hand. That didn't materialise as their form inexplicably imploded in January and February - allowing the Hoops to build a 13 point lead before the season was stopped by Covid.

But the midfielder sees no signs the same weakness will return given the size and depth of Gerrard's squad.

He told Open Goal: "I think Rangers are going to lose a game. I don't think there is any doubt. They are going to have a blip at some point.

"But I don't see it coming soon and I don't see it turning from a blip into a disaster as it has done over the last few years.

"I just think they have so many options across the pitch now. Every single week there are changes.

"Whether it's Arfield, Jack, Roofe or Aribo - they are all performing.

"I don't see them losing a game anytime soon and if they do I expect them to bounce straight back.

"I believe in the saying that strikers win you games but defences win you leagues.

Rangers skipper James Tavernier doesn't believe lack of fans eases the pressure

"Rangers are coming into December and they have conceded three league goals. The confidence that gives you as a player knowing all they need to do is score one goal and hold onto a lead!

He continued: "The only thing I worry about and it's not a big worry but I think everybody is playing well but Tavernier and Kent are the only two for me who are irreplaceable.

"If they get an injury to one of those two I don't think anybody can offer what they do.

"In the rest of the pitch it doesn't matter who comes in and who comes out - they are all performing."
