Andy Halliday leaves Rangers as Steven Gerrard's 'unofficial captain' joins fringe stars in departing Ibrox

Andy Halliday will leave Rangers when his contract expires as he leads an end-of-season Ibrox exodus.

The midfielder's deal runs out in less than a fortnight on May 31 when he will say goodbye to his boyhood club.

He will join Jon Flanagan, Jordan Rossiter, Jason Holt plus backup keepers Wes Foderingham and Jak Alnwick in heading for the exit as Rangers announced a flurry of exits on Tuesday.

Despite an initial Ibrox career revival under Steven Gerrard, Halliday has gradually become a fringe figure and Record Sport understands he's keen to secure more time on the pitch elsewhere.

The 28-year-old midfielder was mainly deployed at left-back by Gerrard but the continued rise of Borna Barisic limited his minutes.

Halliday made just 12 appearances across all competitions in 2019/20, including just six in the Premiership.

Signed by Mark Warburton in 2015, Halliday was a key cog in the Rangers side that swept to the Championship title, also scoring in the 2016 Scottish Cup semi-final defeat to Hibs.

His Rangers career appeared all-but over a year later when Warburton's full-time successor, Pedro Caixinha, shipped the Scot out on-loan to Gabala in Azerbaijan.

But he enjoyed an unlikely renaissance following Gerrard's arrival in 2018, impressing the new boss in pre-season and forcing his way back into contention.

Gerrard even referred to the former Bradford star as his "unofficial captain" last season.

He said in September 2018: “I love Andy Halliday.

“When I came in there was a list of players. Some had ticks, some had question marks and some had crosses.

“It was important to see them close up, eye to eye, in a few sessions, to see if they had the ability or the level.

“At the same time, you are looking at them off the pitch to see what type of characters they are. Andy has just been perfect since day one.

“It was a bit of a shock, really, from what I’d heard or read. His performances are getting stronger and stronger.

“He’s almost like a captain in the dressing room.

“In fact, he is the unofficial captain of this club. He glues everything together.

“He helps the foreign lads a lot and he’s someone who cares about the club. You need these people about.

“It would be naive of me at any stage of my life to judge someone with other people’s opinions. I like to judge people face to face.

“When you come to a club this size you have to give people a chance, especially people that are supporters of the club, people who care and will give you blood, sweat and tears. These are the people you need about the place. Andy, in his head, thought he was gone and not wanted.

“He probably felt the new manager would come in and not want him.

“From the very first training session to the final whistle in Spain on Thursday night he has given absolutely everything.

“I honestly can’t fault him off the pitch either, he’s been magnificent.”
