Andy Halliday injury update as Robbie Neilson looks ahead to Hearts getting competitive in Betfred Cup

Robbie Neilson dispelled any fears over Andy Halliday’s injury after the new signing had to be subbed after just 40 minutes of his Hearts debut.

The midfielder was forced to leave the pitch shortly before half-time during Hearts’ 2-0 win over the Jags at Firhill, and was replaced by youngster Scott McGill.

However, Neilson confirmed that it was nothing serious and the 28-year-old was coming off anyway.

He’ll be afforded minutes in the upcoming Betfred Cup ties, starting with Inverness CT at Tynecastle next Tuesday, to get his match fitness up after six months of not kicking a ball following his departure from Rangers.

“Andy should be fine,” he said. “He just had a tight thigh. It’s his first game since February and he’s only trained for a few days.

“We were going to take him off at half-time anyway. We’ll just let it settle down over the next few days. We’ll use the Betfred and league games to get him gradually up to fitness.”

Neilson was pleased with his side after they won their final pre-season friendly of the season thanks to second half goals from Jamie Walker and Andy Irving.

“I was pleased with the work-rate, and to get another result and a clean sheet,” he said.. “It’s been a decent pre-season for us but now is when it starts.

“I feel in a good place with them but it’s all about Tuesday night now.”
