Andy Halliday in Rangers manager quip as midfielder jokes he's gunning for Steven Gerrard

Andy Halliday joked he's gunning to replace Steven Gerrard as Rangers boss.

But the former Ibrox hero insists he's deadly serious about managing his boyhood club one day.

The 29-year-old is considering his next steps after leaving Rangers at the end of his contract last week.

He's expected to leave the Premiership behind but already has one eye on a career in coaching when he eventually calls it a day on the pitch.

And Halliday admits he can't help but dream of a return to the club he loves.

"I can always see myself being a manager when I finish football," he told talkSPORT.

"Once Steven Gerrard's finished with that Rangers job I think I'll be the one that's taking it next!

"It's written in the stars. I think that's how I'll go back and say my proper goodbyes, by being the manager one day.

"Some people want to go into journalism, some people want to go into agency, some want to be a coach or manager.

"I would like to be a manager when I finish. The goal was to be a Rangers player, so I think my next step is to be a Rangers manager one day."

Asked what it takes to be a good Rangers manager, Halliday replied: "A lot of attributes the gaffer is showing right now.

"Honesty, being fair, being firm, making sure that discipline is there and obviously trying to get results on the pitch.

"The club has progressed since the gaffer's went in, if we can continue that progression and get it right, I look forward to seeing how far we go."

Halliday expects his search for a new home to be a slow one as clubs take stock of a much-changed football landscape.

The former Bradford City star has held talks with unnamed parties but doesn't anticipate a quick resolution.

He added: "It's such a surreal scenario we're in just now, something we've never seen before.

"Some clubs don't know when they'll be back or their financial status.

"I'm already prepared that it's going to be a slow process. I've had a couple of chats with people but, again, falling down that road I know it's going to take time.

"But I'm prepared for it so it's about trying to stay as physically and mentally prepared as possible, and when the time comes take that jump."
