Andy Gray would be 'amazed' if Everton appoint Duncan Ferguson as club's new manager

Everton legend Andy Gray says he would be “amazed” if Duncan Ferguson were appointed the club’s new manager, despite getting off to the perfect start as caretaker.

With Ferguson taking charge for the first time since Marco Silva’s sacking on Thursday, the Blues romped to a 3-1 win over Chelsea at Goodison Park.

A double from Dominic Calvert-Lewin after Richarlison’s opener saw Everton ease to victory as they lifted themselves out of the Premier League relegation zone, with Mateo Kovacic scoring for the visitors.

The performance saw Ferguson instigate an immediate response from his players following Wednesday night’s heavy defeat to Liverpool in the Merseyside derby, which ultimately cost Silva his job.

The Scot though has played down his hopes of landing the role, and Gray, speaking to beIN Sports, doesn’t see the Chelsea result changing the club’s thinking.

“I cannot believe that those two intelligent people will be anything than just delighted with what happened today and the response Duncan got,” Gray said.

“But it’s one thing to get a response of a team that was pretty abject in a local derby three days ago and get them playing differently, than it is to put a man in charge for 38 games of a Premier League season, and ask that same sort of thing to happen.”

“Listen, Duncan hasn’t done himself any harm whatsoever, but I would be amazed if their thoughts about who’s going to be the next coach have changed because of the 90 minutes we’ve just seen.”
