Andy Gray slams 'shocking decision' in Newcastle United's narrow defeat against Liverpool

Andy Gray has slammed the decision that led to Liverpool's match winning goal at St James' Park on Saturday.

The Reds cashed in on three points after Matt Ritchie was wrongly adjudged to have fouled Fabinho deep on the right-hand side of the field before Xherdan Shaqiri whipped in a fine free-kick for Divock Origi to head home the winning goal.

It proved to be a controversial award from Andre Marriner and after Fabinho's dive, Liverpool players were jeered as they went to applaud their fans at the end of the game.

Speaking on beIN SPORTS, Gray said: "It was a shocking decision.

"The officials sometimes say that they are TOO close to the action.

"Liverpool have had their fair share of good fortune in big games when they have needed it.

"That free-kick was another bit of good fortune.

"It was never a free-kick.

"The ball in from Shaqiri was right on the money and it had to be dealt with."

Fellow pundit and former Newcastle and Liverpool man John Barnes also felt United were hard done by.

Barnes said: "There was a bit of tussle going on but Ritchie left him alone.

"I think he pulled him a second and a half earlier but then let him go.

"But when he (Fabinho) goes down there was nothing.

"His (Ritchie's) left arm was there but I don't think it was a free-kick."
