Andy Gray makes claim Rangers fans will hate as he tells Steven Gerrard what to do

Andy Gray has told Steven Gerrard that winning the league this season doesn't matter as long as he wins it next year.

The former Rangers striker has told the club's current boss that stopping 10 in a row for Celtic is the only thing he has to do.

And that's why he believes Rangers fans won't be too bothered if their side don't win the title this campaign, as long as they push Celtic close.

Gray knows Rangers supporters will be desperate to stop the run this season but doesn't believe it's the be all and end all.

He told beIN Sports: "Celtic were the first Scottish side to win nine titles in a row. When Graeme Souness arrives he changed the whole dynamic of Scottish football himself and changed everything about Glasgow Rangers.

"Again, we started on this quest for nine in a row. I didn’t realise, I played in the first one in 88/89 and Rangers went on and got nine in a row and failed to win the 10th.

"So we got to nine, Celtic have done nine, Celtic are on eight again so even though Steven is up there as a newbie he’ll be very aware that Rangers fans don’t want to see Celtic win 10 titles in a row.

"They’ll put up with nine if they get close this year. They’ll put up with that.

"But he definitely cannot let Celtic win 10 next year that’s a certainty. Preferably, win this year and all Rangers fans will be very happy. Celtic fans obviously want nine and then they want the 10th to say ‘we did it’."

Rangers were beaten 2-0 by Celtic at Ibrox after a dismal performance. Odsonne Edouard opened the scoring before Jonny Hayes added a second late on.

Jordan Jones was then sent off for a lunging tackle on Moritz Bauer as the Hoops cruised to victory.
