Andy Flower rules out return as England Test coach after Brendon McCullum sacking

Andy Flower has officially withdrawn his name from consideration to become England’s next Test head coach, following direct discussions with England and Wales Cricket Board managing director Rob Key.

The former Zimbabwe international, who previously guided England to three Ashes series victories during his tenure between 2009 and 2014, had quickly emerged as a leading candidate to replace Brendon McCullum, who departed his role with the red-ball side last week.

However, Flower’s current commitments, which include coaching Indian Premier League outfit Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Hundred side London Spirit, present a significant scheduling conflict. These roles would overlap with the crucial early weeks of the English cricket season, a key factor in his decision not to pursue the England position.

Explaining his choice, Flower stated: "Obviously that is a topic that’s being talked about at the moment. I have spoken with the ECB. We’re all aware of the vacancy for the head coach job of the England national team."

He elaborated on his conversation with Key, adding: "The bottom line for me is that I’m very happy in the work that I’m doing at the moment. I work for a couple of really good organisations, I’ve got really good teams around me, really good people around me. I’m really comfortable with what I’m doing at the moment."

Reflecting on his past, Flower said: "I’ve worked with England before, as you all know. I had an amazing time when I had the privilege to be England head coach and represent England as one of their leaders a number of years ago. I remember those years really fondly."

Despite acknowledging the prestige of the role, he concluded: "It would be a privilege for me or anyone else to be the Test coach. But for me at this time, I’m really comfortable with what I’m doing. I’m going to stick with doing that." When directly asked if he had formally ruled himself out, Flower confirmed: "I have, yes."

England must now continue their search for McCullum’s successor as they look to make an appointment before their three-match series against Pakistan which begins on 19 August.
