Andy Farrell says onus on new Ireland caps to come back wanting more Test action

Andy Farrell wants his new Ireland caps to come back hungry for more and showing they deserve more Test exposure after the season ends this weekend.

Farrell insists the depth chart in Irish rugby is getting "better and better" after naming eight uncapped players in his squad for Saturday's summer series clash with the USA.

Ulster quartet James Hume, Robert Baloucoune, Nick Timoney and Tom O'Toole all get the nod to start at the Aviva Stadium, with four more hopefuls - Harry Byrne, Tom Daly, Paul Boyle and Fineen Wycherley - poised for action on the bench.

Add in first Test starts for Gavin Coombes, who made his debut late in last week's win over Japan, and for Six Nations debutants Ryan Baird and Craig Casey, and there's plenty of new faces on show this weekend.

“I think it is pretty good and I think it is getting better and better," said Farrell of the talent at his disposal, who has been without Johnny Sexton, Cian Healy, Keith Earls and seven Irish Lions during this period, while Peter O'Mahony was stood down this week.

"That's why these windows are so important. We have talked about missing out on tours and they are pretty important to grow the depth but there are always one or two positions that you would like to see people coming through and adding a little more depth.

"But that is a given in any type of squad, I would have thought. We are unbelievably happy with the depth - it is the competition now, isn’t it?

"It's people going home after this window, having a really good think after this summer, whether they consistently want to be back in the room and be, not just a one-cap player, or a five-capper, can they have the hunger, consistency and know-how to get themselves to 30 caps.

"That is the type of attitude we want.”

Asked if he had made so many changes from last week's

“As a coach you are always about the here and now, the next competition that is down the line, the next competition after that, a little bit on the future as well.

"Growing competition is absolutely key. If we have got five or six players in each position that are really, really competing against each other, then the next competition, the World Cup two years from now, will start looking after itself.”

The Ireland boss admits it's a balancing act to try and find a cohesive unit between established internationals and the new men in.

But he wants the debutants to show the coaches why they deserve consideration for selection in the autumn.

“That’s exactly what we are looking for, can they pull out their point of difference on the field?

"They are all there to express themselves but at the same time can they be a team-first player and can they perform under pressure because I am sure there will be a few nerves," said Farrell.

"Concentrating on the detail and how we want to function as a team is going to be a priority and then being able to bring that point of difference within that is a difficult balancing act and that’s what international football is all about.

"Camp for the first time is pretty daunting because you have been so used to one way of playing and it is so ingrained in you in how you play for your province.

"You have new calls, new teammates, getting about your work within six or seven days to be able to perform at your best is a difficult one.

"It takes time to be able to get really good at that so I’m looking to see whether the newcomers can deliver for the team, what we have tried to work on and improve on as a team. They have got to be part of that.

"What tends to happen sometimes when you think you get an opportunity, you become a little bit desperate and that desperation can get in the way of how you want to perform.

"So just trying to calm them down and get them to understand what they need to focus on. That detail and getting the togetherness of the team right I’m sure will grab their attention.”
