Andy Dalton failed to win a playoff game with the Cincinnati Bengals, which makes some of the incentives built into his new Dallas Cowboys contract pretty interesting.
According to ESPN’s Todd Archer, Dalton’s one-year deal with the Cowboys worth $3 million and up to $7 million will only reach the latter mark if he…wins the Super Bowl.
In addition to playing 35 percent of Dallas’ snaps in the regular season, Dalton must do the following:
“…directs the Cowboys to wins in the first round ($500,000), second round ($500,000) and NFC Championship Game ($750,000), he will earn an extra $1.75 million…
…If he wins the Super Bowl, while playing at least half of the snaps and 35% of the snaps in the regular-season, he will earn the final $1.25 million.”
It’s a funny — and smart — bit of contract structuring. The Cowboys nailed down arguably the best backup quarterback in the NFL with Dalton. Should he get on the field, he’ll have a serious shot at meeting some of these qualifiers considering the talent around him.
Call it a win-win insurance policy for both sides. Unfortunately for Dalton, while Dak Prescott has a contract squabble going on in the background, he’s never missed a game and has one of the NFL’s longest quarterback ironman streaks at 64 games.
