Andy Dalton hints at Bengals return, but it would have to be at right price

Friday, a report suggested the Jacksonville Jaguars might still have some interest in Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton — at the right price.

Funnily enough, it wouldn’t hurt for the Bengals to have Dalton back mentoring Joe Burrow.

At the right price.

Dalton himself made it clear Friday a return could still be on the table, per NFL.com’s Mike Silver

“I truly believe they want what’s best for me, but I understand it’s a business, and you know how that goes. With the first pick, if they take a quarterback like everyone expects, that could trigger something. There’s even a scenario where I go back there.”

That’s a narrative both Duke Tobin and Zac Taylor have kept alive all offseason too. It’s also a brief change of pace for Dalton, who wasn’t too thrilled about getting benched last season and spoke to his agent about a trade.

But times change and so do people. As we noted, the NFL delaying the summer schedule in response to the coronavirus pandemic could make it more difficult than usual for a rookie like Burrow to come in and have an impact right away.

That’s where Dalton would be a huge boon for the Bengals. His expertise and willingness to serve as a mentor would be huge for all involved.

The big hiccup is his cap hit north of $17 million, which would have to come down significantly on a contract restructure after the team committed more than $100 million in contracts while getting aggressive in free agency.

Can the Bengals have the best of both worlds? Can they have one of the league’s best backup quarterbacks mentoring Joe Burrow while also structuring the roster as if building around a rookie contract at quarterback?

Yes, but only if Dalton’s willing to play ball.
