Former Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton has a few very good reasons for signing with the Dallas Cowboys.
Let Dalton tell it, the decision to sign on as Dak Prescott’s backup is both a way to find some certainty in uncertain times and a way to set the stage for the second act of his career.
Here’s what Dalton said on The Adam Schefter Podcast:
“This is just the next step for me. I wanted to join a high-class organization and team that’s ready to win and be with Mike McCarthy. His history with quarterbacks gives me a chance to come to a new place, a chance to learn, to help Dak out any way I can, and just be an asset for this team. Obviously, I bring a lot of experience and can bring a lot to the table. I’m here to help this team win and help in any way I can.”
In addition to trying to set up the next phase of his career, Dalton confirmed part of the decison to stay local near his home in Texas was due to the current coronavirus pandemic.
Dalton’s decision to end up with the Cowboys is a surprising but smart one. He’ll get to remain steady for a year, then see what shakes out in free agency next offseason.
And it has been a fun story, too. The Bengals will host Dalton’s Cowboys in 2020. His foundation was flooded with donations after his release. And Dalton made sure to go out of his way to offer Joe Burrow some advice.
