Andy Considine opens up on Aberdeen contract talks and why his form is better than ever

Andy Considine wants to seal a new Aberdeen deal and then celebrate by regaining second spot from Rangers.

The experienced defender has triggered a clause in his deal that will see him stay beyond the summer.

Aberdeen, who take on Kilmarnock this weekend, are currently in fourth place and eight points behind Rangers but Considine is in no doubt that can be clawed back in the top-six split.

He explained: “I still think second is achievable.

“We had to push all the way to the wire last season and if we could do it again then that would be great. It is in our hands.

“We are fighting it out with Killie and Rangers and a lot can happen over the next five games.”

Considine is currently in talks over the finer points of his deal and wants to make sure that he has Europa League football to come back to.

He said: “I am not sure of the length of the contract. We have had conversations with the club and we will see if we can get to a middle ground.

“I know what I have in mind but we will see if the club is willing to entertain it. I would love to be here when the new training ground and stadium are up and running.

“Conversations are still on-going so we will see what happens.”

The 32-year-old has been a one-club man but has come into his own this season. Considine thinks that is down to the fact he is now getting a run in the heart of the defence, rather than at left-back.

He admitted: “The biggest thing for me has just been playing at centre-half. I have been given my chance and I’ve taken it.

“You’ve just got to keep focused and give your best week in, week out.

“I’ve always felt more comfortable at centre-half whether it’s left or right and I think that’s shown in my performances.”

Aberdeen head to Rugby Park this afternoon knowing that Kilmarnock are above them on goal difference but a win would see them leapfrog into third spot.

Considine knows it would be the perfect way to erase some of the pain from last weekend’s Scottish Cup semi-final defeat to Celtic.

He said: “I felt emotional about losing on Sunday, but I felt more embarrassed because of how the game ended up.

“We were minus a few players but I felt we still had a chance. It was a real sore one.

“The main thing now is that we get European football next season.”
