Andy Carroll's Newcastle United future latest with contract extension on course

Newcastle United have a contract extension ready to go for Andy Carroll.

Carroll is believed to be on course to extend his stay at St James’ Park with the club happy with his fitness levels since returning to Tyneside last August.

The striker is pleased with the way things have gone during his second spell, and the feeling is mutual in the boardroom.

United are happy to let Carroll play out the peak years of his career at St James’ providing he continues to prove his fitness.

The Geordie will be 31 in early January but wants to end his career in a black-and-white shirt.

Carroll is working to a training programme tailored to his previous injuries and working with club doctor Paul Catterson who knows the player well from his first stint at United.

The routine has worked so well that Carroll has only missed two matches due to a groin and muscle tweak respectively.

But notably his previously troublesome ankle, which he had surgery in the summer, had held firm this season.

When asked about the old injury, Carroll said recently: “I don’t even think about it now.”

Steve Bruce will manage Carroll’s contributions over the festive period with three games, starting at Man United, coming up in the next five days.

Bruce said: “We’d be delighted to tie Andy up. I know there are stipulations in there. I think something triggers it.”
