Andy Carroll reveals the Newcastle United squad's stance ahead of hectic December schedule

Andy Carroll has revealed Newcastle United's approach going into the Premier League's packed festive period.

The Magpies kicked off December with a fantastic victory at Sheffield United on Thursday night but now face Southampton for a quick turnaround back at St James' Park.

United could surpass the 20-point mark this weekend after an excellent start to the season for Steve Bruce and his squad.

But Carroll revealed United's stance going into a five-game run for the rest of the month.

Carroll said: "We are just playing game by game.

"I think from the first game to the last game that was always going to be the idea.

"That is how we have to look at it."

Were Newcastle to edge past 20 points against Southampton it would match the feat that took until late January to achieve last term.

So are the Magpies arguably a month ahead of schedule this season?

Carroll added: "We won't get carried away. We have had two good results, but we go into Sunday's game in a positive frame of mind.

"We're looking to win and continue this positive run.

"We have got back to the training ground and worked and got the right rest in.

For Carroll his first start coincided with a win against an in-form outfit, Carroll told BBC Newcastle: "It’s just an unbelievable feeling, I can’t really describe it.

"The fans never stopped singing all night.

"They didn’t really have much to sing for other than us defending! And, obviously, the goals.  But we’re delighted."
