Andy Carroll on the brink of joining Championship side Reading after Newcastle release

Former Newcastle United striker Andy Carroll is on the brink of joining Championship side Reading, according to the latest reports.

The 32-year-old left St James Park earlier in the summer and is currently a free agent after the expiration of his contract.

Football Insider claims that the Royals have opened talks with the former Magpie academy graduate and are trying to get a deal done.

Carroll's second stint on Tyneside was blighted by injuries, scoring just once in 43 appearances.

He was one of a number of fringe players cut from Newcastle's squad as the Magpies hierarchy tried to cut the wage bill.

Black-and-white fans had been hopeful that some of the money would be reinvested into the playing squad this summer.

However, the Magpies have only brought in Joe Willock and are not expected to make any more additions to their first team squad today.
