Andy Carroll set to complete Newcastle return on one-year contract

Newcastle are set to re-sign striker Andy Carroll on a one-year deal.

Carroll, 30, is a free agent after leaving West Ham at the end of last season.

A return to St James' Park was mooted earlier this summer with Carroll keen to head back to his former club.

Carroll would even be willing to take a major wage cut to sign for Newcastle and has proven his fitness to manager Steve Bruce.

The Toon boss is a big fan of the striker and Newcastle have carried out fitness checks on the striker, reports the Chronicle.

Carroll had surgery on an ankle problem earlier this summer and has been working with a fitness coach.

He is severely lacking match practice but is up and running during training.

Newcastle are only likely to agree a deal with Carroll if they are convinced he can play some part in the first half of the season.

Meanwhile, Newcastle have announced the signing of defender Emil Krafth from Amiens for an undisclosed fee.

The right-back becomes the club's fourth signing of the summer transfer window.

Manager Steve Bruce said: "We're pleased to bring him here. He turned 25 last week and has great experience, with more than 20 caps for Sweden and having played in the top flight in three different countries.

"He's a good height for a full-back, speaks excellent English and is a very good player. He's a really good acquisition."
