Andy Carroll has lifted the lid on his road back to fitness.
The Magpies striker returned to the club in August and recovered from an ankle operation before making his Premier League comeback.
Carroll is yet to start a game but now has five sub appearances under his belt.
Speaking at the club’s Foundation dinner he said: “It’s been hard.
“I’ve had my ups and downs with injuries, but hopefully I’m past them all now.
“It’s been good, and I’m back in the squad.”
Carroll also spoke of his pride at coming back to the club he came through the youth system.
He said: “It’s been great (being back).
“I’ve missed being home.
“I’ve missed being with my family and friends, just driving around, memories.
“It’s great to be back at the club. I’d say 50-60% of the staff are still the same.”
And reflecting on the weekend win at former club club West Ham, Carroll said: “It’s a great result against my old team, and I couldn’t be happier.
“I was just so happy that we got the three points.
“I went in to see them afterwards and was gloating a little bit!”
