Andy Burnham to be new prime minister after securing 349 votes from Labour MPs

  • This level of support eliminates the possibility for any other contenders to reach the required 81 endorsements.
  • With no other individuals vying for the position, Mr Burnham is anticipated to formally assume the Labour leadership at a special party conference this Friday.
  • He is then expected to take office as Prime Minister just three days later, on 20 July.
  • Despite his uncontested path to leadership, Mr Burnham is still scheduled to participate in an online hustings with Labour MPs later today.
