Andy Burnham: Measly sick pay rate is helping coronavirus spread among the poorest

I supported Matt Hancock's proposal but it was announced late and without supporting documentation.

How often will we see that, when it's hours or days before people's questions are answered?

On the whole, people in Greater Manchester have been brilliant and I reject efforts to blame some for breaking lockdown rules.

That will get us nowhere.

Instead, we should be asking the Government to do more for the communities most affected.

One reason why the virus is spreading in poorer areas is because people in low-paid, insecure jobs know they won't be paid if they abide with test and trace self-isolation rules.

Even the Health Secretary admitted he couldn't live on sick pay, says Andy Burnham (Manchester Evening News)

And, understandably, they don't want to dob in mates in the same boat to tracers.

Statutory sick pay is not the answer.

Two million people have no access to it and it is only £95 a week. Even the Health Secretary admitted he couldn't live on that.

If you get a message from test and trace you should be able to isolate immediately on full pay.

The Government must work out with employers how it's funded.

Workplace data should be shared with local authorities to help teams link infections and stop the virus sooner.

National lockdown was eased too soon and encouraging people back to the pub on Super Saturday was a big mistake, as is the Eat Out To Help Out scheme.

We shouldn't spend taxpayers money on subsidising meals out but not support the low-paid to take time off work to protect their health.

I agree with the Government in moving quickly to introduce this modest change designed to prevent another lockdown later.
