Andy Burnham calls for over-16s to get Covid jabs after regional rise in Indian variant

Andy Burnham has called for over-16s across Greater Manchester to be jabbed after a rise in the Indian coronavirus variant within the region.

Bolton has an infection rate of 162.4 cases per 100,000 people in the week ending May 8, the second highest in the UK, according to the latest data from Public Health England.

The Greater Manchester mayor said the spike in cases was "worrying" - with cases in under-25s doubling within a week.

He told a press conference earlier in the week he had asked the Prime Minister to allow vaccinations in over-16s in specific ‘high risk’ communities.

A 'request is being considered' by the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI), he said.

Mr Burnham explained he has said for some time that areas with the highest case rates should be able to have a surge in vaccine supply, reports the Manchester Evening News.

The sudden rise in infections is thought to be driven by the Indian variant brought into Bolton by people travelling back and forth from India and Pakistan.

Public Health England has also said the town has one of the highest rates of the India variant in the country.

Bolton Council urged everyone who is eligible to get vaccinated and tested.

It comes as a study shows coronavirus infections in England halved in recent months.

Prevalence of infections dropped by 50 per cent between March and early May, and is at its lowest since August, new data suggests.

But the figures come amid a warning from Mr Johnson that new variants "pose a potentially lethal danger".

However, ministers and government advisers are said to remain reluctant to deviate from their plan to vaccinate down the age brackets evenly across the country.

The latest figures show the number of Covid cases in Bolton has more than doubled in a week as the town is a hotspot for the new Indian 'variant of concern'.

With 152 cases per 100,000 people, the borough's rate is almost seven times the national average.

There were 437 positive Covid-19 tests in Bolton the week ending May 7, the latest data shows, which accounts for one in every three positive tests in Greater Manchester.

However, the European Medicines Agency said on Wednesday it was "pretty confident" that vaccines currently in use are effective against the Indian variant – a view echoed by some British scientists.

Foreign Office minister James Cleverly also reiterated on Thursday that the government makes decisions based on the data, when asked if fears around the India variant could mean a delay to the June 21 relaxation of coronavirus restrictions in England.
