The Labour leadership candidate Andy Burnham is charging guests up to £125 a head to attend a Manchester fundraising event, prompting some of his invited supporters to question the cost.
His campaign team said Friday’s dinner at Old Trafford football ground hosted by Burnham and former Labour sports minister Richard Caborn would help him raise “much-needed funds to keep up the momentum in the final days of the campaign”.
Among the guests will be Jamie Carragher, the retired England and Liverpool footballer who has donated to Burnham in the past.
An email to supporters from Burnham’s campaign added: “Tickets have been priced at £125 but I’m pleased to say that we have a limited number of tickets to offer a big discount for our local members and supporters: down to just £30 per person.”
However, some sounded unimpressed as they tweeted to highlight the cost of the event.
Andy Burnham. Speaking with Jamie Carragher. At Old Trafford football ground. Priced at £125. I've had better invitations in my life tbh.

Invite to a £125 dinner for Andy Burnham. I get tickets for £30 cos I'm local (I'm not, 50m away) and I'm a supporter (I'm not) #notselling?

£125 to have dinner at a fundraiser for Andy Burnham. Has he lost the plot?! No wonder Corbyn's winning hands down.

A spokesman for Burnham said: “Andy is still meeting thousands of party members at events all over the country each week. This is a small fundraising dinner to pay for those events and local members have been offered tickets at less than a quarter of the full price.”
