Patrick Bamford's controversially disallowed goal for Leeds United was correctly ruled out, according to Crystal Palace winger Andros Townsend.
Bamford saw an effort harshly chalked off during Leeds' 4-1 defeat to Palace at Selhurst Park in the Premier League at the weekend.
The striker thought he had equalised for Marcelo Bielsa's side but a VAR check ruled that he was marginally offside by virtue of pointing his arm in the direction he wanted the ball played to him.
The decision has been heavily criticised by many in the game - including Bamford himself - but Townsend, while sympathising with his opponent, believes it was the right call based on the current rules.
"I'm not VAR's biggest fan but if you do want to use VAR, you have to use it as a matter of fact," the England international told talkSPORT.
"You're either offside or you're not. If the T-shirt line is the limit, then unfortunately you have to abide by that.
"Yes, I sympathise with Bamford, yes it was unfortunate, but it's offside at the end of the day.
"I'm not just saying that because it was against Crystal Palace. You can't go saying: 'Ah, let's give them a yard, let's give them a couple of yards, let's give the benefit to the attacker'.
"It has to be offside or not, and if you're going to use VAR, you have to give Bamford offside for that goal."
Speaking after the game, Bamford said: "I don't understand the rule. You can't score with your arm. It doesn't make sense.
"It's happened with me today but I've seen it on numerous occasions. It's ruining football. You want to see goals.
"To have it ruled out for something like that is daft.
"Even the referee couldn't make sense of it. When the players and the officials can't make sense of it, does it make sense?"
