Andros Townsend sets Everton goal and assist target with 'successful signing' admission

Andros Townsend has admitted he has ambitions of reaching double figures for goals and assists this season for Everton.

The 30-year-old has enjoyed a flying start to his career at the club having already scored four goals as well as providing three assists for his team-mates.

Injuries to key figures such as Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin in recent weeks has forced Townsend to raise his game, a challenge has successfully risen to.

With two Premier League goals to his name so far, the midfielder has already matched his tally achieved in his two final seasons at former club Crystal Palace - and hopes this is just the start of a productive campaign.

"I have started this season by producing numbers to do justice to my ability," said Townsend.

"Scoring four goals and providing three assists is decent in anyone’s book. But we’re talking about a few weeks.

"Seven games don’t make a successful signing. I want double figures for both goals and assists this season – and I have a manager who is never satisfied.

"I can shoot with both feet and have the quality to consistently produce goals and assists.

"I’ve scored a couple of tap-ins and a penalty already this season and I want to finally realise my potential with Everton.

"If listen to the manager and get in the positions he wants his winger, I will get on the end of crosses and score more scrappy goals."

Everton manager Rafael Benitez appears to have got the best out of Townsend, who he worked with previously at Newcastle United for a brief period.

Like Demarai Gray, the Blues' boss is pushing the ex-Magpies midfielder to reach his true potential and is reaping the rewards of his effective leadership skills.

Townsend is certainly enjoying working under Benitez and described his relationship with the Spaniard as a 'match made in heaven'.

"Rafa demands the very best," said the Blues' summer recruit in his evertonfc.com column.

"I absolutely love that type of man management.

"I want to improve myself every day and he loves improving players, so it is a match made in heaven."
