Andros Townsend sends message to Cristiano Ronaldo after copying celebration vs Man Utd

Andros Townsend insists his attempts at copying Cristiano Ronaldo's celebration was a "mark of respect".

The winger grabbed Everton's equaliser at Manchester United as they came from behind to secure a 1-1 draw.

Townsend fired past David de Gea whilst Ronaldo watched on from the other end of the pitch and then produced the Portuguese star's renowned Siu celebration in front of the travelling fans.

The Toffee confessed his admiration for the five-time Ballon d'Or winner, who has been a huge inspiration in his career.

"Not imitating, it's just a mark of respect to a guy who influenced my career," Townsend told the BBC.

"I spent many hours on the training pitch and in the video room trying to analyse his free-kicks and his stepovers and the way he dedicated himself to football.

"So it wasn't an imitation it was a mark of respect to one of my idols. I probably didn't do the celebration justice and didn't execute it properly."

Townsend's finish cancelled out Anthony Martial's opening goal.

It is his fifth goal in nine games for the Merseyside outfit as his impressive start to life in blue continues.

He and fellow summer signing Demarai Gray have been huge stars this season and Towsend admits he should be producing regularly in front of goal.

"I'm loving my football and I'm so happy to have the opportunity to play for Everton football club and to contribute and score goals," he added.

"I've said many times in the past I should be scoring goals on a more consistent basis.

"For one reason or another I've never really done it over the course of the season. It's been a good start but I'm capable of much more."

The point means Everton remain level on points with United and go up to third, at least momentarily.

The Toffees will face West Ham once they return from the international break but Rafa Benitez is pleased with how his team are adapting to the challenges.

"We played against a very good team. It's not easy to get a result here and we did well," said the Spaniard.

"We concede a late goal that maybe we were not expecting but the reaction of the team in the second half was quite good.

"It's a pity the last one because it's offside but it could be even better but we are pleased with the way we played and the result at the end.

"We are doing well. We have some problems with injuries and still the team is working really hard and reacting really well.

"You can see the team spirit and the fans will appreciate that and the players will appreciate the support of the fans so you can see now we have a very good understanding."

Ronaldo stormed down the tunnel at full-time as United again failed to keep a clean sheet at home.
