Andros Townsend prepared to boycott Premier League game in fight for social justice

Crystal Palace winger Andros Townsend says he would boycott a Premier League game in order to stand up for social injustice.

The platform and influence of sports stars has been highlighted once more after NBA players boycotted a play-off game in protest after Jacob Blake, a black man, was shot in the back seven times by a white police officer.

Fixtures across a host of American sports, including Major League Soccer, were postponed for two days.

Premier League players have stood up during the pandemic, supporting the NHS with the #PlayersTogether initiative before taking a knee in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement before every game across Project Restart.

Asked on talkSPORT if he would be prepared to boycott a game in support of a cause close to him, Townsend said: "Of course, if it is something that I really believed in then you have to.

"I think they are trailblazers in America the way they take a stand for what they believe in and I think a lot of players in this country watch a lot of American sports.

"I think we will take inspiration for that and if there is a social injustice in this country, I am sure we will collectively come together like we have during lockdown, take a stance and do good."
