Andros Townsend hits back at own club for mocking Manchester United's Ashley Young

Crystal Palace winger Andros Townsend has defended Manchester United defender Ashley Young following the Eagles' 2-1 win at Old Trafford on the weekend.

Roy Hodgson's side took the lead through Jordan Ayew before Daniel James levelled the score in the dying minutes with a superb curling effort.

However, Patrick van Aanholt struck in injury time, beating David de Gea far too easily to secure a massive win for the London side.

After the game, Crystal Palace tweeted out a short clip of former United winger Wilfried Zaha showcasing his dribbling skills at his former stomping ground.

Zaha beats Young once with a quick step over before sending the 34-year-old to the ground with a fake shot. Nevertheless, Young recovers to block the incoming cross.

Townsend replied to the tweet with a message of support for Young, stating that he should be praised for his actions in the clip, rather than ridiculed.

He wrote: " A 34-year-old ex-winger vs one of the league's best wingers. He gets destroyed twice yet still manages to block the cross. We should be applauding this not making fun of it. #Respect."

His response was praised by United fans who claimed the former Tottenham winger was "all class" and some even offered to vote for his goal against Manchester City during the upcoming FIFA Puskas award as a sign of gratitude.
