Andros Townsend explains why Paul Pogba is 'disrespected' in England

Paul Pogba is 'disrespected' in England, according to Crystal Palace winger Andros Townsend.

The French midfielder signed for Manchester United back in 2016 in a then world record £89million move from Serie A giants Juventus, but has been plagued with inconsistent performances and criticism for much of time in the Premier League.

Townsend has come up against Pogba on several occasions during their Premier League careers and the former Tottenham and England international believes that Pogba is disrespected for his performances because English football prefers hard tackling and running.

Speaking on ITV while working as a pundit for Euro 2020, Townsend said: "When he plays for Manchester United he's not far behind that, but in England we don't appreciate Pogba. We appreciate those that kick hard and run for 90 minutes and that's not Pogba. We don't respect him enough in this country.”

Pogba was the stand-out player as France beat Germany 1-0 in the opening game of the tournament, before an assist and top performance in France's 2-2 draw with Portugal earned them the title of group winners in the group of death.

After the group stages came to an end, Townsend also claimed that for him Pogba is the player of the tournament so far.

"For me, having watched the group stages, he [Pogba] is the player of the tournament. Some of his passes and touches.. his pass to Mbappe was one of the best I've ever seen."

Pogba will be part of the France side that takes on Switzerland in the round of 16 on Monday June 28th in Bucharest and United will be hoping he will still be part of their Premier League squad next season as he enters the final 12 months of his contract.
