Andros Townsend challenged to seize chance amid Crystal Palace injury woes

Crystal Palace's injury woes could present Andros Townsend with the opportunity to regain his best form.

Wilfried Zaha and Christian Benteke were assessed on Sunday as to whether they could feature against Burnley on Monday night.

Zaha hobbled off after 15 minutes of last week’s defeat to Liverpool, while Benteke was missing altogether at Anfield, giving Townsend the chance to start his first League game of 2020.

The former England winger, who began the season a sure starter, has scored just once all season and was an unused substitute in the final four games before the shutdown.

But he has used lockdown and the early weeks of restart to get himself fighting fit, something that has not gone unnoticed by Roy Hodgson.

“It has been a bitty season for him,” said the Palace boss.

“He has been one of those players that we lost for quite some time through injury. He is fully fit now and worked very hard during this post-lockdown period. It is an opportunity for him and I am sure he is going to get many chances to play.”
