Android users warned to delete these costly apps from all devices

Android users are being warned to check their smartphones after some popular apps were found to be hiding a dangerous form of malware.

The apps are all thought to contain Joker malware which is capable of wreaking havoc on any phone it infects, reports the Express.

It can install hidden spyware and premium rate dial-ups onto devices, which can then sign-up unsuspecting users to expensive monthly subscription plans.

Some victims have been hammered with costs in excess of £240 a year for these fraudulent subscriptions and police have urged users to make ditch any apps which may contain the malware.

Police in Belgium posted on a website: "Warning! The Joker virus is back in the Android environment. This malware has been spotted in 8 apps from the Play Store which have meanwhile been withdrawn by Google, but if you have already installed one, remove it as soon as possible."

Researchers at cybersecurity company Quick Heal Security Lab warned this later Joker virus can gain access to text messages, contacts and a lot of other vital information on smartphones.

Like other versions, it can also then subscribe unwitting users up to websites offering paid services leading to a nasty surprise to monthly bills.

Here is the list of affected applications:

• Auxiliary Message

• Element Scanner

• Fast Magic SMS

• Free CamScanner

• Go Messages

• Super Message

• Great SMS

• Travel Wallpapers

Security specialists Zimperium reports it is aware of more than 1,000 new variants of Joker since 2020. And the company is warning that cyber thieves have routinely found new and unique ways to get this malware into both official and unofficial app stores.
